Aesthetic medicine today faces the challenge of more and more doctors entering the market offering Botox or filler treatments. The increased choice presents potential patients with the problem of deciding which doctor is “right” for them. At The Aesthetics, we too are asking the questions, “What criteria make a good doctor?”, “How do I, as a doctor, become an expert?”, “What exactly is an expert?” and “How does a patient choose the right doctor for them?”.
It should be said at the outset that aesthetic medicine is a field of medicine where, among other things, more money can be earned than in other subjects. This naturally attracts one or the other doctor to work in this field. Another development is that the products used have improved greatly in the last ten years, but are also becoming more and more similar or comparable. Furthermore, based on anatomical studies, new layers and structures in the face and body have been discovered, which has also expanded the techniques and possibilities of where or how Botox and fillers are injected.
WHAT CRITERIA MAKE A “GOOD” DOCTOR?
Is it the price at which the injections are offered? Does that mean that a high price indicates high quality and a low price indicates low? This may be true in some cases, but it is certainly not a guarantee. Or is the one who has collected or “written” the most reviews the “best” after all?
WHAT ABOUT THE PRODUCTS THAT ARE USED?
As already mentioned, these are becoming more and more similar in quality in recent years, so they are not a decisive criterion either – provided, of course, that they are purchased from a reputable supplier.
In our opinion, it is primarily about the skill of the doctor, the understanding of the problem and subsequently the approach to achieve an optimal, and largely natural, result. As the KNOWLEDGE and the SKILL of the doctor.

The negative effects of “bad” treatments are quickly recognizable: these can be rigid and frozen faces or too much volume has been added in the wrong places. Inflatable lips or grotesquely sprayed faces are the result, as we know it even from one or the other star. The goal should be that the face continues to move naturally. A good doctor knows the human anatomy and deals with his patients individually. Knowing how a vessel runs not only two-dimensionally but also three-dimensionally, which muscles can be treated with each other and in which layers which filler can be applied is elementary.
WHAT MAKES AN EXPERT?
The questions that arise here are: “How does a doctor become an expert?” and “Who assigns the designation expert? Does the respective physician do it himself?”. Reality shows that “expert” is not a legally protected term and therefore it is very possible that there are so-called “self-proclaimed experts”. In the opinion of Dr. Rolf Bartsch, an expert is someone who deals intensively, and over a very long period of time, with a subject and specializes in it. At this point, it is important to always stay up to date. This is ensured, on the one hand, by ongoing training in the field and, on the other hand, by participating in and exchanging ideas at international congresses and expert summits. In addition, another way to deepen and consolidate one’s own knowledge is to pass it on, for example in the form of lectures and workshops.
HOW IMPORTANT IS EXPERTISE WHEN CHOOSING A DOCTOR?
In addition to the doctor’s knowledge, i.e., knowledge of human anatomy, what is needed above all is practical experience in a field. Someone who offers many things at the same time can therefore hardly be an expert in all these fields. Aesthetic medicine is developing far too rapidly for that.
WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF RECOMMENDATIONS – ON THE INTERNET AND FROM PEOPLE I KNOW?
Recommendations or evaluations on the Internet are definitely justified. However, caution is also required here, as it is possible to buy them. Thus, many recommendations are not a sure guarantee of high quality. Rather, care should be taken to ensure that the reviews are genuine. If you get opinions on such platforms, the overall picture should count and not statement of individual. However, we usually feel that personal recommendations are the best.
WHAT YOU SHOULD ALWAYS LISTEN TO – YOUR GUT FEELING!
Do you feel understood by the doctor and in good hands there? Do the before/after pictures meet your taste? Listen to yourself during the initial consultation! Your gut feeling will not deceive you!

In a marketplace crowded with more and more providers, it has become very important for patients to distinguish between someone who is truly “good” and someone who only “sells themselves well on the outside.” But how can a potential patient tell? In our opinion, it is not so much the products used, the price, patient reviews, likes or followers. Rather, it is the expertise, the knowledge of the doctor and the offer of individualized concepts. Last but not least, the chemistry between you and the doctor should be right – trust your gut feeling here!
